The Elizabeth Houser-Betty Bauserman Andrews Endowment for Scholarships in Education was established by Betty Bauserman Andrews in honor of her mother who attended Harrisonburg’s State Teacher College, which is now James Madison University.

“I have established this scholarship to honor my Mother. She was a 1930s attendee of the old Harrisonburg’s State Teachers College, later Madison as I attended in the 50s and of course now giant James Madison University! She and her sister Frances were the first in our family to attend college. For that opportunity, she was forever grateful to her brother Leo, the administrator of their father’s estate, who found the money to pay for their schooling. She worked at a summer resort prior to her freshman year, and with that money she provided other necessities for college life. Of course she could work there only because she was in the companionship of several of her high school teachers. And it was there she began her exposure to life outside the quiet Shenandoah Valley town where she was born. She loved Harrisonburg State Teacher’s College and was forever changed and challenged by her time there. She trained in elementary education, but always had a love of history, music and the arts.” – Betty Bauserman Andrews
