Dr. Edna Tutt Frederikson

The Otto and Edna Frederikson Scholarship was established through an estate gift from Dr. Edna Tutt Frederikson. Dr Frederikson was from Everton, Arkansas. She attended to the University of Iowa, University of Nebraska and the University of Wisconsin. In 1931 she received her Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. That same year Dr. Otto Frederikson, her husband, joined the staff of the State Teachers College, later to become Madiosn College, and now James Madison University.

Edna taught in the English Department from 1932 to 1941 and was in charge of ""The Breeze"". Otto taught history and social science. In 1940 Edna was awarded a fellowship to the Bread Loaf Writers Conference in Vermont. There she worked on her first novel, ""Three Parts Earth."" She did not publish the book until 1972. In 1982 Dr. Frederikson was recognized for her poetry, awarded the first prize in the Herbert Carruth Memorial Poetry Contest at the University of Kansas. In 1989 she published a book of verses, ""Never Tomorrow.""

Edna and Otto retired from Madison College in 1957, and they made four around-the-world trips, 14 trips to Europe, and traveled the U.S. extensively. Dr. Edna Frederikson passed away in 1998.
