Colonel Sandra S. Whitt (’62), US Army, Retired Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established by Col. Sandra S. Whitt (’62) with a gift from her estate.

This scholarship endowment will provide financial resources annually to support scholarships for students whose primary residence is in Southwest Virginia and who demonstrate financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. Southwest Virginia is defined as the following counties: Lee, Wise, Dickenson, Buchanan, Scott, Russell, Tazewell, Washington, Smyth, Bland, Giles, Grayson and Wythe and the cities/towns of Galax, Hillsville, Marion, Bluefield, Richlands, Abingdon, Bristol, Norton, Wise, Covington, Clifton Forge, Wytheville, Martinsville, Cedar Bluff, Tazewell, Chilhowie, Appalachia, Pennington Gap, Big Stone Gap, Honaker, and Grundy.

As long as the student remains in good academic standing, the scholarship may be renewed for no more than four years. If there is not a student from Southwest Virginia in a given year who demonstrates financial need, the award may be given to another student who is a Virginia resident with financial need, with the caveat that a student from the above defined region will be given first preference the following year. Scholarships will be awarded in a manner determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships and shall follow the University’s guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.
