Black Alumni Chapter Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established by The Black Alumni Chapter of James Madison University.

Allocations from the endowment will provide financial resources annually for two incoming freshmen. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years as long as the student remains an undergraduate in academic good standing. The application process for the scholarship will include a required essay of 250 words or less from each student applicant explaining a demonstrated record of leadership and/or service to African American culture or a multicultural community along with how diversity has impacted the student personally and how the student plans to engage in the JMU community. The annual allocation will be split evenly among the students who are receiving the scholarship. In the event a Black Alumni Chapter Scholar becomes ineligible for renewal, another qualifying student may be selected to finish the renewal term.

During the period of transitioning to renewable scholarships under the new criteria set forth in April of 2024, scholarships will be awarded as follows:
• For academic year 2024-2025, renewable scholarships will be awarded to two incoming freshmen, two rising sophomores, two rising juniors, and two rising seniors.
• For academic year 2025-2026 and thereafter, two new incoming freshmen will be selected to receive the scholarship each year following the amended criteria.
• The annual allocation will be split evenly among the up to eight students receiving the scholarship.

Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Vice President for Access and Enrollment Management or designee along with a selection committee as defined in the agreement and will follow the University’s guidelines for the awarding of scholarships.

Applications will be collected through the BAC Cultural Leadership and Inclusion opportunity.
