Katherine Nicole Norton ('17) Memorial Scholarship Endowment in the Elementary Education Program
An endowed scholarship established through an endeavor started by Anastasia and Stuart Norton (’83) in memory of their daughter Katherine Nicole Norton. Katherine passed away in August of 2015, before beginning her junior year and being able to complete the Elementary Education Program and pursue her passion for teaching. The Katherine Nicole Norton (‘17) Memorial Scholarship Endowment in the Elementary Education Program was established to honor Katherine’s love of JMU, Kappa Alpha Theta and her dream of becoming a kindergarten teacher. The endowment was funded through charitable contributions from family and friends who desired to honor Katherine’s life in this special way.
Beyond the criteria of being a student in the Elementary Education Program, scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Dean of the College of Education and will follow the University’s guidelines for awarding scholarships. The Donors direct, that as the endowment grows over time whether by additional gifts or appreciation, to gradually increase the number of recipients. Additional scholarships will be awarded when expendable earnings are sufficient to fund another recipient, noting the minimum award given to any one student is $1,000. The annual allocation will be split evenly among the students receiving the scholarship under this criteria.
NOTE: Donor intent is that no one student receive more than $1,999. Once this point is reached, the full opportunity amount should be split equally, with a minimum award of $1,000.
