Lori J. Mowen (’80) and Susan R. Cumpston (’82) Academic Scholarship Endowment
An endowed scholarship established with gifts from Lori Mowen (’80) and Susan Cumpston (’82). The Donors intend for this scholarship to fill the gap between the cost of attendance and other federal, state, and private aid. The endowment will provide financial resources annually to support scholarships for undergraduate students majoring in any discipline.
Scholarship recipients must:
- Be a first-generation college student
- Reside in the state of West Virginia and/or a county or city in the Appalachia Region of Virginia, as defined by the Appalachian Regional Commission, currently as the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Bland, Botetourt, Buchanan, Carroll, Craig, Dickenson, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Henry, Highland, Lee, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Rockbridge, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise, and Wythe, and the independent cities of Bristol, Buena Vista, Covington, Galax, Lexington, Martinsville, Norton, and Radford
- Demonstrate high financial need, as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships
- Meet, and preferably exceed, academic good standing as defined by the University
The first scholarship may be awarded to an incoming freshman who meets the above criteria. Awards in subsequent years may be made to new incoming freshman as funding permits. Scholarships may be renewed for up to four years, as long as recipients continue to meet the established criteria. Scholarships will be made in a manner determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
