Dr. Shirley B. Merlin Scholarship Endowment for Graduate Reading Education
An endowed scholarship established by Professor Shirley Merlin, The Dr. Shirley B. Merlin Scholarship Endowment for Reading Education will provide financial resources annually to one student in the Graduate Reading Education program who is pursuing a master’s degree in Reading Education. To be eligible for this scholarship, a student must (a) have and maintain high academic standing, as determined by the faculty of the Reading Education program; and, (b) have completed a minimum of nine hours in the core education courses and six hours in Reading Education by the time the student is under consideration for this scholarship. The selection of Dr. Shirley B. Merlin Scholars shall be made in a manner determined at the discretion of the coordinator for the Reading program, in consultation with the Dean for the College of Education and in collaboration with the university’s Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships. Dr. Merlin directs that if the university may, at any time in the future, not enroll students in a Graduate Reading Education program, then this scholarship endowment’s funds may be used more generally to assist students preparing to be teachers, with the selection to be made in a manner determined at the discretion of the Dean for the College of Education.
