Mary Carter Farrell ‘84 and Francis X. Farrell ’82 Endowment in support of Undergraduate Students’ Summer Research in Biology

An endowment established by Mary Carter Farrell ’84 and Francis X. Farrell to honor Dr. Janet Winstead, professor emerita of Biology.

This endowment will provide funds annually to support undergraduate students majoring in Biology or Biotechnology who engage in guided scientific research during the summer that either arises from or advances their academic studies and may be used to support a student’s attendance at a national forum or a professional/academic conference (of a discipline-appropriate association) in the event the student has an opportunity to present findings derived from the student’s research.

As to the selection of students as Farrell Research Scholars, the appointments shall be made each year by the academic head for the Department of Biology in a manner determined at the discretion of the department head. The Donors only specific criteria is that students considered for this award shall be rising juniors or seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence (reflected by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.25 (on a 4.0 scale) and a passion for research (reflected in recommendations provided by faculty members on behalf of candidates). It is the Donors’ desire that this endowment will encourage Biology majors to pursue research opportunities during their undergraduate careers and then, consider professional careers in a scientific, medical, pharmaceutical, or related research discipline. Beyond the above criteria, the appointment of a student to receive these research-related funds shall follow the university’s guidelines for the awarding of such funds.
