BAC Cultural Leadership and Inclusion Scholarship Endowment

An endowed scholarship established by Kevin C. (’84) and Dawn Allen (’86) Battle and Deborah Tompkins Johnson (’78) in support of the efforts of the Black Alumni Chapter (BAC).

Annual allocations from the endowment will provide scholarships for full-time undergraduate students who are in academic good standing as determined by the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, who will have the ability to override the full-time requirement on a case-by-case basis. The scholarship is renewable for up to three years as long as the student remains an undergraduate in academic good standing.

Scholarships will be awarded at the discretion of the Vice President for Access and Enrollment Management or designee and will follow the University’s guidelines for the awarding of scholarships. The Vice President for Access and Enrollment Management or designee will convene a selection committee comprising: Director of Admissions or designee; Director of the Center for Multicultural Student Services or designee; Director of the African, African-American, and Diaspora (AAAD) Studies Center or designee; and the AVP for Constituent Engagement or designee. The Vice President for Access and Enrollment Management or designee, with input from the selection committee, will determine the number of recipients and the scholarship amounts noting that awards will be of a size that is large enough to recruit and/or retain students and subject to the availability of funds to maintain renewals for current recipients.

The application process for the scholarship will include a required essay of 250 words or less from each student applicant explaining a demonstrated record of leadership and/or service to African American culture or a multicultural community along with how diversity has impacted the student personally and how the student plans to engage in the JMU community.
