Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. - D. Lathan Mims Scholarship Endowment in Journalism - Renewable

An endowed scholarship established in 1985 and permanently endowed in 1999 to provide funds annually for a scholarship to an incoming freshman journalism major. The scholarship is renewable for up to 3 consecutive years as long as the student enrolls for a minimum of 12 hours each semester, maintains a 3.0 grade point average and continuously participates in JMU student media. Of the annual allocation, a portion will be split evenly among the students who are receiving the scholarship under this criteria (up to four students).

The selection of students as Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr. – D. Lathan Mims Scholars will be made by a committee, appointed by the director for the School of Media Arts & Design. The composition of this committee shall be inclusive of faculty members in the School of Media Arts & Design and a representative of the Daily News Record or its successor.
