A.C.C.E.S.S. Scholarship (Aspiration, Community, Collaboration, Equity-Mindedness, Social Mission, Servant Leadership)

The purpose of this scholarship is to support PPH student success and to support the health and well-being of individuals or communities that may be historically underserved, underrepresented, misunderstood, minoritized, or marginalized. We welcome applications from:

  • Students who identify as underrepresented in the health professions*, and
  • Students whose service, leadership, or career interests advance equitable access to health care for underserved or marginalized populations.

Underrepresentation in the health professions may relate to factors such as race, ethnicity, income, immigration status, first-generation college status, veteran status, religion, disability, childhood language, sexuality, gender identity, rural or underserved residence, or family background.

All PPH students who share a dedication to reducing health disparities and expanding access to care are encouraged to apply.

  1. If you identify as a member of an underrepresented group in the health professions, describe how this identity has shaped who you are today. If you do not identify as a member of an underrepresented group, reflect on how your experiences working with, learning from, or supporting individuals or communities from underrepresented backgrounds have influenced your perspective. In either case, discuss how these experiences will strengthen your ability to serve others as a future health care professional.
  2. Describe two of your most meaningful activities or experiences during your college years. (These do not need to be affiliated with JMU.) For each, explain your specific role, what you accomplished or contributed, and how the experience has strengthened your preparation for entering a master’s or doctoral-level professional health program.
  3. Describe the factors that sparked your interest in pursuing a career in the health professions. Explain how you have sustained your motivation and commitment through the challenges of preparing for this path. Include specific experiences or reflections that have confirmed your decision to pursue your intended health profession.
