In 1913, Agness enrolled in the Harrisonburg Normal School, now James Madison University. She was the head of the Honor Council and became the president of the first Student Government Association. By 1917, she was the youngest faculty member at the Normal School. In February 1918 she married Raymond C. Dingledine, a professor of mathematics at the school.

The Dingledines’ daughters, Jane and Agness, graduated from Madison College. Their son, Raymond, went to the University of Virginia and then taught at Madison College after World War II. Their other son, William, became a doctor. Agness’ husband, Raymond Sr., died in 1941. After his death she worked as the college alumnae secretary and as housemother and advisor for Sigma Sigma Sigma.
